Birth Certificates

New Mexico Birth Certificates are restricted access records.

State law restricts access to the registrant's Immediate Family members or those who represent tangible proof of legal interest in the requested record.

Immediate Family means any of the following: mother, father, sibling, child, current spouse, or maternal or paternal grandparent. Paternal grandparent is eligible if father is listed on the vital record.


Obtaining a New Mexico Birth Certificate by mail

To obtain a birth certificate by mail:

1. You may print out and mail (do not email) the birth search application form

If you receive your mail at a Post Office Box, please include a physical street address for our internal files.

The fee for a birth certificate is $10 per certified copy. Please make your certified check or money  order payable to "New Mexico Vital Records" in the exact amount.

Do not send cash.

Obtaining a New Mexico Birth Certificate in person

*** IMPORTANT NOTICE *** At the current time, in-person counter service for obtaining birth certificates may be suspended for brief periods at the local health offices. This is to allow the local health offices to re-assign staff to H1N1 vaccination efforts. Please contact the local health office before going to make sure they are issuing birth certificates at the time you want to go. Click here for contact information.

The individual making a request must complete an application available at the office and present a current government issued picture identification. The search fee for a birth certificate is $10.00 per certificate.

Counter Service for requesting birth certificates through the Santa Fe State Office is available Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Counter hours are subject to change during Holidays or other infrequent closings. The Santa Fe State Office is located at 1105 South St. Francis Drive between Cordova Road and Alta Vista Street. (Get Directions). The Local Telephone Number is (505) 827-0121. Counter Service for requesting birth certificates through the Albuquerque Stanford Public Health Office is available Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. The Albuquerque Office is housed at the Stanford Public Health Office at 1111 Stanford NE. The telephone number is (505) 841-4185.
